K Blog 2017-2018, May 15th

We are hard at work on our final Performance of Understanding for the year. The K's are having a great time learning lines and getting into character. You are in for a real treat!

It was great to see all of the K's participating in the Walk-a-thon, last Friday. I enjoyed counting up their stamps and the ecstatic looks on their faces as they walked the track. One of our kindergartners did 42 laps! Wow!

We also got to meet some creepy crawly critters last Monday. I've included pictures of brave students meeting these new friends. We are also nurturing some Painted Lady butterflies in our classroom. They have recently entered the chrysalis stage of development!!

What's Happening In K

Readers Workshop

  • We discussed how to decide what a book is about. We take in the cover, title, pictures and text to form an idea. Then we think about the patterns we see.
  • We have begun to read books about insects.
Writers Workshop
  • The kindergartners wrote short rainbow poems, and stories about insects.
Math
  • We began our exploration of story problems using addition or subtraction, and how we can decide which to use to find the solution.
Social Studies
  • We are hard at work on our Performance of Understanding. We are practicing listening for queues, blocking,  and using our stage voices.

Art

To finish off the year, we have begun our studies of abstract art. We started by learning about the artist, Kandinsky, and his love of music. While listening to some of the music that inspired him, we made our own pieces of abstract art using line, shape, and color.

Music

The Kindergarteners are currently preparing for our upcoming Spring Concert on May 24th. Our theme this year is Swing Music and we will hope to surprise you with our fun song choice! In preparing for this, I am using a hollow-body jazz guitar and we have been talking about the differences between electric guitars and acoustic guitars.
