K Blog 2017-2018, January 15th

In a few weeks the Kindergarten class will begin work on our first Performance of Understanding. The K's have had the opportunity to watch all of the other classes perform and are ready to get their turn in the spotlight. The Performance of Understanding is exactly that, a chance to gain a deeper understanding of what its like to perform in front of and audience, as well as an opportunity to explore a topic or an idea in a new and engaging way.

What's Happening in K

Reading
Popcorn Words: you, big, here

  • The K's shopped for new books, and reviewed some of the reading strategies we have learned.
  • We read the story The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats and then practiced reading comprehension by completing story webs. We learned to recognize the beginning, middle, and end of a story.
  • We practiced "partner power."(Reading with a partner)
Writer's Workshop
  • We started 2018 by making new hopes and dreams.
  • Your students wrote about kindness in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Math
  • We worked on the math concepts involving matching numbers and quantities, counting forwards and backwards, determining values as more or less.
  • The kindergartners practiced adding numbers to 5. (i.e 1+4, 2+3, 0+5)
Social Studies
  • The kindergartners celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. MLK Jr. We focused on his message of peace and love, and how we, as citizens, can apply these ideas to our every day lives.

Music

The Kindergarteners have been having fun learning about note values, beginning with quarter notes and eighth notes. They play a game in which they become a series of notes, and the “conductor” gets to rearrange them and we all clap what we see! It’s fun! The Kindergarteners did a beautiful job working on and performing their songs, Jingle Bells and The Ha Ha Holiday Song, for the Winter Concert. This was their first time on the big stage at the upper school and it was exciting!

Art

In art class we have been decorating our portfolios and preparing to take artwork home. The kids enjoyed looking back at their creations from the first half of the school year.
