K Blog 2017-2018, May 1st

Last Tuesday was Project Night and the Art Exhibit at Black Pine Circle. We focused primarily on group work to build the tiny towns that you saw displayed in the K classroom. This project incorporated all of our major subjects (reading, writing, math, social studies and science). It was great to see our youngest students advocating for their ideas, and showing support for the ideas of their peers. This project is a great example of one of the four tenants of BPC, "community". When we debriefed in class about  the project, a common thread was that all of our students felt like they were listened to, and that their ideas we're valued by their group. They found ways to include everyones input into their towns, right down to agreeing on the names. One of our towns (Animal/Ninja Town) even combined their naming ideas to include everyones thoughts. As is often said in our classroom "Team work makes the dreamwork!"

Another tenant of our BPC community was on full display that night, as well. "Voice." The kindergarteners conceptualized, created, and refined two pieces for the Art Exhibit, and then were given the opportunity to share these pieces with everyone. The shows theme, "True Stories," allowed them to tell a story through visual representation. My favorite aspect of this event is the kindergartners curating and explaining their work the night of the exhibit. If you got a chance to talk to any of them about their pieces, you probably witnessed the pride they took in creating and telling their own story.

Kindergarten P.E.

A truly great time was had by all when Kindergarten and 4th grade teamed up for a combined P.E. class! The Kindergarten kids enjoyed getting to play games with their friends from 4th grade!

Gardening

Kindergarten Dragonflies and Butterflies have now both had their tasting parties, and are back to working hard in our Learning Garden. The snow peas that they started from seeds are growing quickly, and we are in the process of planting them along the fence in the garden. The Kindergarteners are shooting up almost as quickly as the snow peas, and first grade is right around the corner!

Thank you, Kindergarteners for beautifying our school!
